Zone 1 of the Atlantis Special Economic Zone (ASEZ), in the Western Cape, was officially launched on April 7 with the sod-turning ceremony for the Quantum V3 facility, which will support South Africa’s green industrialisation agenda.

The event was attended by Trade, Industry and Competition Deputy Minister Andrew Whitfield.

The ASEZ serves as a powerful catalyst for economic growth, green industrialisation and long-term prosperity. Designated in 2018 and now fully operational, the ASEZ has already attracted R815-million in capital investment and created over 420 permanent jobs.

The launch of Zone 1 further accelerated this progress, having delivered essential infrastructure such as water, sewer, roads and smart grid technology — future-proofing Atlantis as a competitive green manufacturing hub, the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (dtic) stated.

More than R25-million in Zone 1 contracts have been allocated to local small, medium-sized and microenterprises (SMMEs), exceeding the 30% target and creating 389 construction jobs, with 171 of them filled by people from the greater Atlantis area.

“We are not just building roads and installing lights. We are building a stronger community, empowering SMMEs and creating jobs for the people of Atlantis,” Whitfield said.

The event highlighted renewed momentum in driving sustainable industrial development, job creation and inclusive economic growth.

“The ASEZ is not just about infrastructure. It is about unlocking the potential of high-value industries, empowering communities and building the resilient, low-carbon economy South Africa needs,” he said.

The R18-million Quantum V3 facility will manufacture acetylene gas and will feature solar energy systems, sustainable hempcrete construction and advanced digital technologies.

This aligns with the dtic's industrial policy priorities of decarbonisation, digitalisation and diversification, Whitfield said.

“The Quantum V3 facility is a bold vote of confidence in Atlantis and in South Africa’s green economy. It embodies the kind of innovation and commitment that will define our industrial future,” he added.

Additionally, Whitfield also noted wind tower and flange manufacturer GRI Towers South Africa, which is based in the ASEZ.

The dtic has reaffirmed its support for renewable energy sector manufacturing and its associated value chains.

“As the dtic continues to champion inclusive industrialisation, the ASEZ showcases what is possible through collaborative partnerships and purpose-driven investment.”
